According to ¡°Paldo Chongdo (Map of Eight Provinces),¡± which is included as Dongramdo [an appendix] of the ¡°Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (Newly Verified Survey of the Geography of the Eastern Kingdom)¡±that was completed in 1530 (the 25th year of the reign of King Jungjong), Dokdo (Usando) is referred to as Usando, which is located in the center of the sea to the east of Gangwon-Province. The island of Usando (Dokdo) is described as an island that is to the west side of Ulleungdo. The document records that Dokdo is elliptical in shape and that its axis extends north to south. The map was made in a transitional period in which the location of the two islands was reversed. The value of the map is that it is an official geographical document that clearly states Korea¡¯s possession of Dokdo. This is the oldest stand-alone map in existence.
